Torch-on felt or GRP: which flat roof system is right?

Both systems can be suitable when specified and installed properly. The best choice depends on the roof shape, substrate, exposure, access and the details around edges, outlets and rooflights.

Both systems can be suitable when specified and installed properly. The best choice depends on the roof shape, substrate, exposure, access and the details around edges, outlets and rooflights.

Torch-on felt: where it works well

Modern torch-on bituminous systems are formed from layers of compatible roofing membranes. They can be a practical option for many flat and low-pitched roofs. Installation involves hot work, so precautions, substrate condition and suitability of the surroundings are important.

GRP: a different type of system

Glass-reinforced plastic roofing forms a rigid resin-based covering. It can provide a seamless-looking finish, but the substrate preparation, resin system, weather during application and movement details must all suit the job.

The roof shape matters

A simple rectangular roof is different from a roof with several rooflights, awkward upstands, door thresholds or restricted outlets. Either material can perform poorly if the roof falls and water-management details are wrong.

What about repairability and upkeep?

Repair options depend on the existing system, its age and condition, and whether compatible repair products are available. Regularly checking outlets and debris build-up is important whatever finish is used.

What should the quotation explain?

Ask for the proposed roof build-up, deck preparation, edge details, outlet treatment and any insulation changes to be written down. Comparing only the top surface material does not tell you whether two quotes cover equivalent work.
